Ellerton Bungalow Gampola

Ellerton Bungalow Gampola

Welcome to Ellerton, a boutique hotel sitting on its own hilltop in the centre of Sri Lanka At Ellerton our aim is to give you the feeling you are staying in a friend's house and not a hotel. We deliberately lack many of the features associated with hotels but these are more than compensated for by a genuinely relaxed and informal atmosphere.

Owned by Richard and Cary Goode, Ellerton was built for the manager of a large tea estate more than 100 years ago and it retains today the character and tranquillity of colonial days.
Ellerton is close to the geographic centre of Sri Lanka. Colombo and the international airport is 3 hours away and the World Heritage city of Kandy with its renowned botanical gardens and other tourist attractions is 30 minutes drive. The Cultural Triangle to the north is only 2 hours away making Ellerton an excellent base from which to explore the island.

At 2,400 feet Ellerton combines the best of Sri Lanka's weather. The sun in the day is hot, while the evenings and nights are relatively cool without the stickiness of the coast, nor the distinct chill of the hill country.

The beautiful gardens are full of interesting flowers, butterflies and birds including the the Sri Lankan Hanging Parrot, Golden Oriole, Sunbirds and the Plum Headed Parakeet. The garden also provides vegetables and fruit for the house.
The countryside around Ellerton is crossed by many paths and tea estate roads, making walking and biking easy and delightful.

Surrounded by a beautiful tropical garden, Ellerton is a magical place to relax and unwind. The Main House has a large sitting room furnished with antiques, a dining room which seats 12 and a study where you can watch international news via satellite TV. There are 3 guest bedrooms, two doubles and one twin, all with their own bathrooms. The twin bedroom and one of the double bedrooms have attached rooms with a single bed which can be used as triples.
The Valley House is near the swimming pool, and some thirty yards away from the main house. It has spectacular views and has three generous bedrooms, two double and a twin, the double bedrooms have large bathrooms with baths and walk in showers, whilst the twin has a shower. A great advantage of the Valley House is the huge veranda which is a natural place to sit and read.

The Dining Pavilion is a large open-sided building where meals are usually served. There is also a seating area providing a shady retreat to read or admire the view.
Ellerton is very informal and we can accommodate most requirements for meals. We offer a 3 course set menu for dinner which includes a non-curry or Sri Lankan curry main course. We have a policy of giving free drinks with meals including local alchohol - which means beer, gin, whisky and mixers as well as fruit juices.

Our water comes from our own spring and borehole. We drink it but if you prefer we can provide you with bottled water.

The swimming pool is a wonderful vantage point from which to gaze at the view 20 miles down the valley. The pool is fed from our own borehole and we use very little in the way of chemicals, greatly enhancing the pleasure of swimming.
This is our home when in Sri Lanka so the house is furnished in a relaxed 'country house' style. There are books and magazines for guests to read, music to play and games and cards are available too.

Distance From Colombo : km
  • We have no formal reception – BUT there are always staff available, as well as the Manager and House Manager to deal with any particular questions or problems that you might have.
  • We have no bar – BUT we are happy to serve you tea/coffee or local alcoholic drinks (beer/gin/whisky) whenever you would like.
  • We do not have complex menus with a huge range of food - BUT we do have two excellent chefs, and dinner is three courses, with a variety of dishes and we are normally able to check with individual guests that what is planned, is fine for them. We always offer an alternative main course of a local Sri Lankan curry – typically five/six separate curry dishes of meat and vegetables.
  • We do not have powerful air conditioning in any of the rooms - BUT that really is not necessary at the 2,500ft height of Ellerton, although in very hot weather some guests might want to use the fans that are in each of the rooms.
  • There is no multichannel television in the bedrooms - BUT we find that guests at Ellerton really do not want that. There is a satellite television in the Main House (seldom used!) but which will receive CNN/BBC World etc.
  • There are no telephones in the bedrooms either- BUT we are very happy for you to phone anywhere within Sri Lanka for free, or international calls at a nominal charge. Please speak to one of the staff. Of course if you want service, the Valley House has a telephone to call the kitchen, and the rooms in Main House have bells.
  • There are no mini-bars offering expensive drinks – BUT we give free drinks whenever (within reason), you would like.
