Kalpitiya - කල්පිටිය
Located north west of Colombo, Kalpitiya is known for its diverse natural habitats ranging from bar reefs, flat coastal plains, saltpans, mangroves swamps, salt marshes and vast sand dune beaches. The seas here are home to spinner, bottlenose and Indo-Pacific humpback dolphins, whales, sea turtles, and even the elusive dugong that are of great appeal to potential tourists.
Fact: Kalpitiya, with its near constant strong winds, is widely considered to have the best kitesurfing conditions in South Asia.
Whale and Dolphin Watching: This morning wake early and head out to sea for chance sightings of the giants of the deep blue sea. Whale watching in the seas of Kalpitiya is a delight, and not as touristic nor congested as the experience in the island’s south. Schools of dolphins hundreds strong can often be seen jostling and playing in the offshore waters and boat safaris offer close-up views of these aquatic mammals.
